closed system grossly distorted sound calibration below 1 khz, whereas at frequencies higher than 6 khz calibration for the open loudspeaker was affected. This difficulty could be avoided by placing the loudspeaker close to the bird's ear (12 cm). 2. R. L. Boord and G. L. Rasmussen, J. Comp. Neurol. 120, 463 (1963). 3. For this reason, all data on single-unit thresholds and frequency range in t...

Propagation of coupled Rayleigh-gravity waves on the ocean floor

It is shown that the Ocean-Earth crust interface can propagate gravity-sound Rayleigh waves. Dispersion properties of waves and flux of energy are derived. It is shown that the waves split into low and fast velocity branches. The fast branch has a multimode structure and has a cutoff in frequency and wave number. Numerical solutions are discussed.

Pore-Level Modeling of Carbon Dioxide Infiltrating the Ocean Floor

Ocean sequestration of carbon dioxide is considered to be a potentially important method of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (US DOE, 1999). Oceans are currently the largest atmospheric carbon dioxide sink; and certainly, enough storage capacity exists in the oceans to hold all of the CO2 that we can emit for many years. Additionally, technologies exist that allow us to pump liquid CO2 into th...

A proposed biogeography of the deep ocean floor

While there are many generalized schemes representing the biogeographic distribution of life in the deep sea, reviewed here, a comprehensive analysis has not been undertaken since Vinogradova (1979, 1997) for the abyssal and Belyaev (1989) for the hadal. The purpose of this paper is to propose global biogeographic provinces for the lower bathyal and abyssal benthos (>800 m depths) in order to a...

Casualty rates among naval forces ashore.

Casualty rates for naval forces ashore across varying battle intensities are needed as input to medical and manpower planning models. Casualty data of medical and construction battalions participating in World War II amphibious assaults, Korea, and Vietnam were extracted from archival sources. Casualty rates among naval ashore forces fluctuated with battle intensity. The rate during intense com...
